Returned home in November 1664 to enter service of Miklós Zrínyi (q.v.), who died two weeks after Bethlen's arrival. Fought against Turks in 1665. After declaration of peace went to Venice and learned Italian. On return home became court commissioner. Lived on his estate in Betlenszentmiklós. Married twice. Imprisoned in Fogaras as partisan of Pál Béldi; released in 1677. Sergeant in 1681 campaign; leader of district army in 1682. After victory of Zernyest went to Vienna, where he prepared "Leopoldinum-diploma," a plea in behalf of Transylvania. Participated in 1690 Parliament. Back in Vienna in 1695. Named count by Leopold I in 1696. Seized in 1704 by court in Vienna for "Olajágat viselő Noe galambja," which advocated an independent Transylvanian principality. Imprisoned in Szeben 1704-1708 and in Vienna 1708-1716. During imprisonment wrote Imádságoskönyv in Transylvania and Önéletírás in Vienna. Released shortly before death. ¶ Abilities manysided. Engaged in architecture and designed his own manor-house. Wrote political pamphlets in support of independent Transylvania. His main work, Önéletírás, an autobiography, is distinguished by the presentation of his personality and by its general characterizations of his times. It contributed to the development of Hungarian narrative prose.

BORNEMISSZA PÉTER

Born February 22, 1535 in Pest; died before June 24, 1584 in Rárbok. Prose writer; Lutheran minister and superintendent. Descendant of middle-class family, whose prosperity was much reduced by Turkish invasions. Orphaned in 1541, and brought up in Felső-Vidék. Studied in Kassa 1548-1553. First sought out Hungarian cities and cultural centers and later attended universities in Italy, France, and Germany (1557-1559). Melanchthon's student in Wittenberg. On return engaged in printing business in Kassa and Debrecen. Became Lutheran clergyman in 1564 and, with certain interruptions, served Balassi family and tutored Bálint Balassi (q.v.) in Zólyom. Charged with celebrating Mass with bread in 1564. In Ungvár in 1565 on diplomatic mission to army of Menyhért Balassi and Lázár Schwendi. Known to be in Zólyom in 1567. Appointed Superintendent of Mátyusföld in 1570. Minister in Galgócz in 1572 and preacher in Sempte by 1573. Began literary activity with Hungarian reworking of Sophocles' Elektra (1558). His most productive years began in 1570 with publications issued regularly from his own press at Sempte. Seized for concepts expressed in Ördögi kísértetek and imprisoned in Vienna. Escaped after three weeks and returned to Sempte. Driven from Sempte in January 1579. Went to Beczkóvár and from there to Detrekővár, where he again came under protection of Balassi family. Completed Énekek három rendbe in 1582 and Prédikációk, a collection of his new sermons, in 1584. ¶ Generally considered to be the most cultured and humanistically erudite Protestant preacher-writer in 16th-century Hungary: he united contemporary Italian-German culture and knowledge of Greek and Latin classics with Hungarian learning. ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into English and Russian.

Attended schools in Eger and Budapest. Writings appeared in periodicals while he was still a gymnasium student. First interested in becoming art teacher and painter, but financial problems forced the end of his schooling and acceptance of employment in uncle's law office in Békés-Gyula. Publication of Nyomor (1884) brought him immediate fame. Edited Erdélyi Képes Újság and Kolozsvári Élet, its supplement, and Magyarság in Kolozsvár, Transylvania, 1888-1890. Married after hasty courtship. Returned to Budapest in 1890 and pursued writing and journalistic career. Joined editorial staff of Magyar Hírlap in 1892 and then Az Újság, but writings were also published in other periodicals. In 1902 he founded Fehér Könyv, which he wrote entirely by himself. In 1903 founded Jövendő, predecessor of Nyugat, with Zoltán Ambrus and Géza Gárdonyi (qq.v.). Attempted suicide in Semmering in 1905. ¶ His efforts to reconcile romantic and naturalistic styles, as well as other experimentations, were an important influence on later generation of writers, especially those connected with Nyugat (Móricz [q.v.] and Ady [q.v.]). Championed modern literature. Greatly affected by Zola's Nana. His writings portray slander and maliciousness and contain psychological observations and social criticism. Much of writing of historical importance only, but among novels, A nap lovagja, Hófehérke, and Az ezüst kecske and among dramas, A dada, A tanítónő, and A medikus, as well as some 30 short stories, are considered to have lasting value. ¶ A nap lovagja, A tanítónő, Emberek, Faust orvos, Hófehérke, and Királyfi és koldusleány have been translated into German; Két szőke asszony into Czech; A kétlelkű asszony into Czech and German; Az egri diákok into Polish; Az ezüst kecske into Italian; Rembrandt into English; and some of his short stories into French, German, Rumanian, and Serbian.

CSOKONAI VITÉZ MIHÁLY

Born November 17, 1773 in Debrecen; died January 28, 1805 in Debrecen. Poet, dramatist. Descendant of middle-class family. Father's death in 1786 left family in permanent dire circumstances. Began schooling when six; entered gymnasium at ten, where teachers, e.g. József Háló Kovács, Gerzson Fodor, and Ézsaiás Budai, recognized his ability and influenced his later development. Entered Debreceni Református Kollégium in 1788, and completed studies in philosophy and theology. Read widely beyond assignments, especially writings of István Gyöngyösi (q.v.), András Dugonics (q.v:), and József Gvadányi (q.v.). Learned Italian and read most Italian writers of 17th and 18th centuries, especially Zappi, Rolli, Maffei, and Metastasio; the latter greatly influenced his skill in versification. When 18 wrote Békaegérharc, a humorous narrative poem based on Latin version of Homer's Batrachomyomachia. First poems published in 1793 in Uránia, edited by József Kármán (q.v.). Became teacher at Debreceni Református Kollégium, but barred from classes in 1795 because of school's dissatisfaction with his performance and alleged Jacobin sympathies. In summer 1795 he went to Sárospatak to study law, but left in 1796 without career plans to stay with friend in Bicske in Transdanubian region. Went from there to view parliamentary session in Pozsony, where he began Diétai Magyar Múzsa, a verse periodical, which ceased with 11th number. Met Juliánna Vajda, "Lilla" of his poems, in Komárom in 1797, but her father prevented marriage. In March 1798 went to Somogy County and lived at István Sárközy's home, serving as substitute teacher from May 1799 to end of school year. Left Somogy County in spring 1800 and walked to Debrecen, arriving in middle of May. Visited Ferenc Kazinczy (q.v.) in Alsóregmerc, who had just been released from Kufstein prison. Never in good health. Poverty and limited success in publication worsened his condition. Caught cold delivering funeral sermon in Nagyvárad, Transylvania; developed pneumonia and died, revising writings and planning future ones to very end. ¶ Best lyric poet of Literary Revival. Poems show characteristics of classicism, folk poetry, pre-romanticism, and, mainly, rococo style, of which he is last major representative in period. Pre-romantic in worship of solitude and nature, in manner of Rousseau, whom he admired. Displayed versatility and artistry in versification new in Hungarian poetry, and was first true researcher and specialist in Hungarian verse forms and meters. Influenced by Italian versification. His use of forms of folk poetry anticipated future refinements by Sándor Petőfi and János Arany (qq.v.). Also wrote plays. First Hungarian translator of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Majority of poems published posthumously. Poets of Nyugat School drew new attention to his significance in early 1910's. ¶ Dorottya has been translated into German and Rumanian, Békaegérharc into Rumanian, and some of his other poems into Bulgarian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Rumanian, Russian, Slovakian, and Swedish.

CZUCZOR GERGELY

Born December 17, 1800 in Andód; died September 9, 1866 in Pest. Poet, linguist. Given name: István. Father a peasant. After his birth family moved to Szemő and then to Érsekújvár. Schooling obtained at Szemő, Érsekújvár, Esztergom, Nyitra, and Pozsony. Learned German, Slovakian, and Latin. Became member of Benedictine Order and served probationary year in Pannonhalma under name Gregory. Studied philosophy in Győr for two years and theology at Pest seminary. Wrote poetry before ordination in 1824. Discovered by Károly Kisfaludy (q.v.). Affiliated with group consisting of Mihály Vörösmarty, József Bajza (qq.v.), and Ferenc Toldy. On staff of Aurora and Athenaeum. Taught in Győr in 1824, later in Komárom. Edited almanacs. Learned Hungarian linguistics by himself. Corresponding member of Academy in 1831, its secretary in 1835, regular member in 1836. Returned to Pest when secretary. At this time difficulties began with ecclesiastical censor, who placed his writings on Index. Forced to resign from Academy. Expelled from Pest by church authorities in 1837 and spent most of next eight years in Pannonhalma engaged in learned studies and translating. Assigned editorship of Hungarian dictionary by Academy in 1845. Returned to Pest. Poems in 1848 urged revolution against Austria. After failure of Revolution he was imprisoned for long period in Buda, Pest, and Kufstein; released in 1851 after repeated requests from Academy. Spent remaining 15 years working on dictionary, occasionally acting as dramaturge for National Theater. Wrote very few poems during this period. ¶ One of the outstanding and influential representatives of romanticism in the Age of Reform. Used numerous verse forms, most of them important to an understanding of period. Among lyric poems, his folk songs are of especial interest and express feelings of the people in forms of Czuczor's own invention resembling those of traditional folk poetry. Wrote first truly Hungarian romantic epic: "Augsburgi ütközet" (in Aurora, 1834). Translated hymns from Middle Ages and works of Cornelius Nepos and Horace. Many writings concerned with linguistics. Magyar nyelv szótára, completed by János Fogarasi, remains a major contribution to Hungarian learning. Wrote works on history, geography, and other learned subjects. ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Rumanian, Russian, and Serbian.

DAYKA GÁBOR

Born March 21, 1769 in Miskolc; died October 20, 1796 in Ungvár. Poet. Father's death in 1771 brought poverty to the family. Mother died in 1790. Began schooling in Miskolc with Minorites in 1779 and continued it in Eger with Cistercians in 1782. Education made possible by financial aid from philanthropists and teachers. At end of 1784 went to Kassa to study for ministry at Eger seminary, where he was ill for a year with incipient tuberculosis. Apparently became acquainted with Dávid Baróti Szabó (q.v.) in Kassa. Went to Pest near end of 1787 upon disestablishment of county seminaries. Continued studies at Pest Seminary, where he distinguished himself in theology and languages. Besides German and classical languages, read English, French, and Italian. Dedicated himself to the development of Hungarian culture; organized society for advancement of Hungarian language and literature among associates. Formed permanent friendship with Ferenc Kazinczy (q.v.). In 1790 returned to Eger upon reopening of county seminaries, but trouble with church authorities over his views led him to resign before ordination. Spent 1791 in Szikszó with Imre Vitéz and then lived for short time in Méra composing poems. Marriage to Zsuzsanna Reich in August 1792 was an unhappy one. Taught at gymnasium in Lőcse 1792-1795, where Kazinczy visited him. Obtained chair in humanities at Catholic gymnasium in Ungvár. On December 20, 1795, arrived seriously ill with pulmonary consumption. Hardly able to speak by April 1796. Resigned and died six months later. ¶ The outstanding representative of Hungarian sentimental poetry. Noted for artistic form of lyrics. Verses called "poems of pain." Major theme: the evanescence of life and its approaching end. Expressed feelings without the artificiality usually attending sentimental poetry. Early user of anacreontic form in Hungary. Few of his poems were published during his life, but he influenced Kazinczy, Csokonai, and Berzsenyi (qq.v.). ¶ Some of his poems have been translated into English and German.
