Persia

From 1501 to 1732 the so-called Safavida dynasty ruled the territory of today's Iran and partly Iraq. Besides the Habsbugs this dynasty was the most dangerous competitor of the Osman Empire. Conflict with them influenced the struggle against the Hungarians as well, since the Osmans did not want a war on two fronts in spite of the fact that they had significant military and financial resources. The dynasty flourished under the rule of Shah Abbas I (1588-1629).
