frontier headquarters

Győr 2
Zsigmond Forgách
The system of smaller border fortresses, guard-houses and sentry points organised into a larger main fortress and its surrounding border defence i.e. the frontier headquarters. Soldiers guarding sentry points reported to the commander of the main fortress that served the purpose of the frontier headquarters. His superior authority was the Court Council of War situated in Vienna which directed military affairs on behalf of the emperor. The headquarters of Győr included some 11-12 border fortresses and was surrounded by nearly 10 smaller guard-houses and sentry points.
