martalóc = south Slav soldier

Pillaging Turks
They were mainly south Slav Christian soldiers. They were of peasant origin. Some of them joined the army because they were exempted from taxes, some because of partial exemption for taxes plus 1-2 akches of soldier's pay, and some were professional mercenary soldiers in Turkish fortresses. In Hungary the majority of them belonged to this latter category, but there were some soldiers from the other groups as well. In the hierarchy of the Turkish cavalry they were at the bottom. They supplemented their small income with continuous plundering.
