Sultan of the Ottoman empire. (1566-1574). The grandson of the great conqueror of the East: Selim I. (1512-1520) and son of Suleiman I. sultan (1520-1566), who came to power at a relatively old age when he was forty-two years old. In contrast to his grandfather and father, his military expeditions were less successful. In 1568 he signed a peace treaty with both of his enemies the Habsburgs and the Persians. His most significant conquest was to take Cyprus from the Venetians in 1571. Through this his empire became the exclusive controlling power of the Eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea.
