Érsekújvár (Nové Zámky, Slovakia)

Érsekújvár 3
An important fortress in the chain of fortresses from Pozsony to Zólyom. It was built on the right bank of the river Nyitra from the middle of the 1570s by the Military Court. It was one of the most modern fortresses of the border defence system against the Turks. It was a so-called fortress town, where border fortress soldiers lived together with civilians. The fortress had a hexagonal shape. It fell to the Turks in 1663, and it became the residence of the last Turkish province (vilayet) in Hungary. Imperial troops reoccupied it in the summer of 1685 in the war of reoccupation (1683-1699).
