Pope between 1294 and 1303. He was the opponent of the French king, Philip IV (the Beautiful) in the debate concerning the question of the papal primate. the first holy year was celebrated under his rule in 1300. He was the supporter of the Angevines for the Hungarian throne.The French king's men attacked him on his family estate, in Anagni, and a few days later he died, apparently from stress.

Gentilis

Franciscan monk, cardinal. In 1307 Pope Celemen V sent him to Hungary as a minister to help Charles I. On 10 November he personally negotiated with Máté Csák at Kékes, who accepted Charles as King then. When he excommunicated Máté Csák on 6 July 1311 he left the country in September.

Castiglione, Branda (1359-1443)

Bishop of Piacenza (1404-1443), from 1411 cardinal, papal diplomat, legate. He came from Milano and taught law at the university of Padua. Pope John XXIII appointed him in 1410 his legate in Hungary, to settle the unfriendly relationship between him and King Sigismund. In 1412-13 he was the governor of the bishopric of Veszprém (at the same time ispán [bailiff] of Veszprém). In 1421-25 he was Czech legate against the Hussites. He founded a library on his homeland, in Padua, he supported sciences and arts in Hungary, too.
