Osman ruler between 1389 and 1403. He was born around 1354 as the eldest son of later Murad I. As a result of his marriage to one of the princesses of Germijan he received the territories around Kütahya. In the battles against the Karamans he received the name 'Lightning'. He followed hhis father on the throne, who died in the battle of Kosovo polje [Rigómező]. He conquered nearly the whole of the Balkans. For his victory in the battle of Nicapoles he received the title 'sultan' officially. In the battle near Ankara in 1402 he was defeated by Tamerlane, and a year later he died in Tamerlane's captivity.

Turkish tribes who fell under the power of the Osman dynasty, that extended its power into North-West Anatolia at the end of the 13th century. The later Osman Empire was based on the power of the dynasty and not on national affiliation.
