Born May 30, 1786 in Kohány: died July 26, 1864 in Pest. Novelist, writer of stories and tales, dramatist. Descendant of illustrious family of nobility of Protestant faith. Completed schooling at Sárospatak Reformed College and spent 1798-1802 at Evangelical College in Pozsony to perfect his use of German. Also knew French and Latin. Studied law, and after completing studies went to Pest, at 18. First work, Bokréta, published in 1807 in Pest with help of Ferenc Kazinczy (q.v.). Served 1810-1818 as district administrator of Pest County, first in Pest and then in Vác. Left post and turned to farming, community affairs, and literary activity in Nógrád County. In 1823 returned to Pest, where home became meeting place for Mihály Vitkovics, István Horvát, Pál Szemere, Ferenc Kölcsey (q.v.), Károly Kisfaludy (q.v.), and Mihály Vörösmarty (q.v.). In 1831 was named honorary member of Academy, youngest of 16 so chosen; in 1845 became its acting president. Married Zsuzsanna Sziráki in 1831. Elected representative of Pest District to parliamentary sessions in Pozsony regularly 1832-1836. Associate director of National Theater with Gábor Döbrentei 1834-1835. Director of Kisfaludy-Társaság 1837-1840. In 1840 established Pesti Hazai Első Takarékpénztár, a savings bank. After Revolution of 1848 withdrew from public life and devoted himself to writing. ¶ Tales, short stories, and early novels considered to be the most important antecedents of social criticism in fiction. A Bélteky ház was first Hungarian novel of manners. Wrote dramas and political works. His stories considered to have the most lasting value.

Born January 6, 1766 in Debrecen; died February 23, 1828 in Debrecen. Poet, botanist. Descendant of well-to-do family originally of aristocracy; father was a bonesetter and veterinarian. Attended Debreceni Református Kollégium till 1782. Average student but showed ability in literature and botany. Much affected by ten-year friendship with János Földi, whom he considered his master in poetry and botany. Left school and became hussar. Soldier for 14 years (second lieutenant after eight years, first lieutenant in 1796). Served seven years in Galicia. Participated in campaigns against Turks and French. Traveled in Belgium, southern Holland, and western Germany. Resigned commission at end of 1796 and returned to Debrecen. Never married. Learned men of the town, including Mihály Csokonai Vitéz (q.v.), visited him frequently. Increased his participation in community affairs in 1804. Worked to rebuild Nagy Templom, a Protestant church destroyed by 1802 fire. Sent manuscript of Ludas Matyi to Ferenc Kazinczy (q.v.) for criticism in 1804. Opposed Kazinczy in Arcadia dispute in 1806. Became town treasurer, member of several organizations, and captain of civil guard. Helped to establish botanical garden in Debrecen. Lived by farming, did not consider writing poetry main occupation. Wrote some lyric poems between 1804 and 1819. Reworked and enlarged Ludas Matyi in 1814, which was published in 1815 without his knowledge. Founded, edited, and wrote most of Debreceni Magyar Kalendárium until his death. Died of consumption. ¶ Early poems have rococo quality. Ludas Matyi is of lasting interest; historically, it is first literary work to use the techniques, instruments and tone of the folktale successfully and to place peasant (in character of Döbrögi) above nobleman in Hungarian literature. An essential predecessor of the revolutionary and populist tendencies of Petőfi (q.v.). With Sámuel Diószegi he prepared Magyar füvész könyv, first book on Hungarian botany and based on Linnaeus. ¶ Ludas Matyi has been translated into Chinese, Czech, German, Rumanian, Russian, and Slovakian, and some of his verses into Bulgarian, French, and German.

Born July 17, 1888 in Budapest; died July 1967 in Budapest. Poet, aesthetician, dramatist, novelist, short-story writer. Father a civil servant. Orphaned early. After obtaining doctorate in jurisprudence taught economics in commercial gymnasium in Budapest. During October Revolution in 1918 became one of directors of Alkotó Művészek és Tudományos Kutatók Szövetsége and legal adviser to Vörösmarty Academy. Placed on pension after failure of Revolutionary Government. Traveled extensively between World Wars I and II: Austria, Germany, Poland, Italy, and Greece. Named privat docent of aesthetics at University of Budapest in 1947. Awarded Kossuth Prize in 1948. Beginning of literary career coincides with founding of Nyugat on January 1, 1908, to which he contributed until it ceased publication on August 1, 1941. ¶ Author of dramas and fiction but most important as poet and aesthetician. His poems show pessimistic attitude toward life and world and rebellion against fate, and affection and sympathy for human condition and destiny. Continually concerned with basic questions of life; developed motifs with pathos and in biblical and Greek style. One of creators of free verse in Hungarian poetry. Influenced succeeding generation of poets: Gyula Illyés, György Sárközi, Miklós Radnóti, and Sándor Weöres (qq.v.). ¶ A feleségem története has been translated into French and Polish, Nevetők into German, and some of his poems into French, German, Hebrew, Italian, and Rumanian.

Born January 17, 1884 in Új Nép; died January 21, 1953 in Budapest. Poet, publicist, critic. Father a chandler. Family moved to Budapest after 1890, where they experienced great poverty. During university years he was employed by several dailies and literary periodicals: A Polgár, Egyenlőség, A Hét, and Pesti Napló. Read English, French, German and Italian, and gained notice as translator: Song of Roland, works of Keller, Mistral, Storm, Verhaeren, Ada Negri, and others. Built reputation quickly with satirical verses, cabaret writings, and articles on public and current affairs. Became increasingly radical in political views and participated during World War I in anti-militaristic movement developed by Világ and led by Ervin Szabó. Welcomed October Revolution in 1918 and joined Revolutionary Government in 1919. After its failure he emigrated to Vienna, where he joined staff of Bécsi Magyar Újság and Proletár, in which he attacked the Horthy government and Oszkár Jászi. Beginning in fall of 1924 he made many trips to Paris and northern France for the Communist party. Political activities led to his banishment from Vienna in early 1926. Moved to Berlin and served as staff member of Vörös Segély public relations oiffice and Rote Fahne and as Berlin correspondent of Ogonyok and Pravda. Joined editorial staff of Linkskurve in 1929. Went to Prague, then to Moscow in 1933, where he continued to write in German. In 1938 he resumed connections with Hungarian literature in Moscow and edited Új Hang. Staff member of Igaz Szó and Kossuth Radio during World War II. Returned to Hungary in April 1945. Worked for number of dailies: Szabad Nép, Új Szó, Szabadság, and Világosság; edited Ludas Matyi. Awarded Kossuth Prize for writings in 1953. ¶ Many-sided in use of literary forms. In first two decades, his writings were strong in use of traditional forms; later writings prepared the way for socialistic literature in Hungary. Poetry of Vienna period generally considered to be his best. Translated dramas of Hauptmann, Chekhov, Gorky, and living Soviet authors. Mainly a humorous and satirical writer. ¶ Editions of his writings are available in German, Italian, Polish, and Russian; Dr. Senki has been translated into German, and some of his poems and short stories into Bulgarian, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, Rumanian, and Spanish.

Born October 10, 1812 in Szekszárd; died November 5, 1853 in Pest. Poet, newspaper editor. Descendant of middle-artistocratic family in difficult financial circumstances. Made own schooling possible in Szekszárd, Pécs, and Pest with earnings from tutoring. Entered University of Pest in 1829; became medical student three years later. Some poems published while a student. Left medical training for writing career in 1833. Became assistant editor of Regélő in 1833 and developed into prolific writer: reports, poems, short stories, historical articles, literary criticism, and translations. Married Márta Pap in 1836; she died six months after marriage. Married Mária Babocsay in 1837. Wife often ill. Edited supplement to Conversations lexikon with Péter Vajda (q.v.) and Endre Kunoss; also Hajnal, an almanac for 1837, 1839. After four years with Regélő became editor of Rajzolatok. Founded Pesti Drámai Egyesület to encourage the writing and acting of Hungarian dramas. Early in 1838 moved to Pozsony and became newspaperman with Hírnök. Disagreed with conservative editorial viewpoint and wrote translations of foreign news exclusively. Returned to Pest in 1839 and worked on editorial staffs of Jelenkor and Társalkodó. In 1842 began to edit Regélő Pesti Divatlap, successor to Regélő, with János Erdélyi (q.v.). Resigned editorship in 1844 because of poor health and became librarian at University with help of Ferenc Toldy. Became corresponding member of Academy in 1839 and member of Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1843. Works receiving awards: his poetry (1843) from Academy, Frangepán Kristófné (1846) from Kisfaludy-Társaság, and Bosnyák Zsófia (1847). Wrote column in Életképek beginning in 1845. Named professor of Hungarian language and literature at University of Pest in April 1848. Assistant editor of Kossuth Hírlapja August-September 1848. Poor health prevented his participation in Revolution. After Revolution he was arrested for revolutionary poems but quickly released. Retired from professorship and was named officer in University of Pest library. Despite worsening health and failing eyesight, he continued to writer dictated last works to family. ¶ Best known for poems. Wrote successful historical narrative poems, especially ballads, which are romantic in their turning to Hungarian past. Az obsitos (1843), like most of his writings, enjoyed great popularity, and János Háry, its hero and Hungarian Munchhausen, became famous. Poetry influenced by Vörösmarty (q.v.). Dramas are rhetorical and romantic; not as important as criticism and writings on theater. Wrote studies of Shakespeare and pointed to French romantic drama as model for Hungarian dramatists. Translated French plays, wrote many articles on contemporary affairs, and left uncompleted a university textbook on Hungarian literary history and linguistics. ¶ Two editions of his poems are available in German; Az obsitos has been translated into German, and some of his other poems into English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Serbian.

Born August 3, 1863 in Agárdpuszta; died October 30, 1922 in Eger. Novelist, short-story writer, dramatist, poet. Father, Sándor Ziegler, an engine-fitter in Vienna, returned to Hungary in 1848 on hearing of Revolution. Gárdonyi began studies in Sály. Entered gymnasium of Református Kollégium in Sárospatak in 1874 but left in February 1875 for Reformed gymnasium in Budapest. Registered at Catholic teacher-training institution in Eger in 1878. Became assistant teacher and choir master in Karád in 1881. Received teaching certificate in 1882. Became assistant teacher in Devecser in 1883, Sárvár in 1884, and Dabrony in 1885. Contributed to Hazánk in Győr in 1885 and to Győri Közlöny 1885-1888. Published Tanítóbarát and Néptanítók Naptára 1886-1888. Moved from Győr to Szeged in 1888. Edited Szegedi Híradó 1888-1889 and Szegedi Napló 1889-1891. Left Szeged for Arad in summer 1891 and worked on staff of Arad és Vidéke. Moved to Budapest in December 1891. Joined editorial staff of Magyar Hírlap in 1892, and name gradually became known. Moved to Eger in 1897, where he devoted energies solely to writing. Visited Paris in 1900, and Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Turkey on other occasions. Member of Petőfi-Társaság and Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1903; corresponding member of Academy in 1910, honorary member in 1920. Also member of Dugonics-Társaság and, because of Dante translation, member of the Unione Operaia Umberto I de Napoli and Reale Accademia la Stella d'Italia. Awarded prize in contest conducted by Le Journal in Paris for "Mari néni meg a Pista bácsi," a short story, in 1899. ¶ Used nearly all literary forms. Very popular during lifetime, and many writings are still being read, especially by children. Realist with romantic overtones. Simple style with ability to characterize and dramatize. Researched materials for writings. Short stories and social novels important, but historical novels were most significant for their reconstruction of Hungarian past and for their grasp of inner spirit of earlier times. Most of his works use village life as their theme, and even historical novels give attention to peasants. Works generally considered to be most lasting: A láthatatlan ember, ahistorical novel; A bor, a play; and Az én falum, stories and sketches. ¶ A bor has been translated into Finnish, Italian, Polish, and Rumanian; Az a hatalmas harmadik into Croatian, French, Italian, and Turkish; Két katicabogár into Dutch, Esthonian, Finnish, German, Spanish, and Tutkish; A láthatatlan ember into Bulgarian, Dutch, Esthonian, Finnish, German, Spanish, and Turkish; Annuska into German; Egri csillagok into Bulgarian, Esthonian, Finnish, German, Russian, and Slovakian; Isten rabjai into Italian; and some of his short stories and poems into Bulgarian, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovakian, and Swedish.

Born March 30, 1907 in Budapest; died May 5, 1945 in Wells, Germany. Short-story writer, novelist. Father a master locksmith. Much information about early-life based on self created legends. Experienced many hardships as a child. Studied at Árpád Gymnasium but attended trade school after sixth form. Completed trade school and worked at various trades until age 30. First short story published in Az Est in August 1924. Travelled in Germany 1928-1929 on fellowship from Az Est. Awarded Mikszáth Prize for Nagymosoda in 1931. Widely acclaimed for ability to blend vision and reality in his writings. Honored at 25th anniversary of founding of Nyugat in 1932. Awarded Baumgarten Prize in 1932 and 1934 and Nyugat Prize for "Ukránok kivégzése," a short story, in 1935. Obtained position in Kistext Customhouse Store in 1933. Praised by such figures as Dezső Kosztolányi, Milán Füst, László Németh, Lőrinc Szabó (qq.v.), György Bálint, and Gábor Halász. Never joined revolutionary movements. Beginning in 1941 served in forced labor camps in Nagykáta and Gyertyánliget and during free time worked on autobiography published posthumously. Remained in Pest through last days of World War II. Became ill and was taken to Germany when hospital was evacuated. Sent first to concentration camp in Mauthausen and then to Günskirchen in spring of 1945. Believed to have died of typhoid fever in Wells two days after liberation by American army. ¶ His writings show movement from romantic to realistic outlook. Subject material is autobiographical. His fiction full of sorrow and outlook characterized by human sympathy and brotherhood for masses. ¶ Some of his short stories have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Serbian.
