Born July 2, 1879 in Tiszacsécse; died September 4, 1942 in Budapest. Novelist, short-story writer, dramatist, publicist, critic. Father a peasant. Studied at Debreceni Református Kollégium (1891-1893), Sárospataki Kollégium (1894-1896), and school in Kisujszállás (1896-1898). Entered Debreceni Református Kollégium in 1899 to study theology but transferred to law after six months. His first work, "A bécsi bútor," appeared at this time, and he worked for Debreceni Ellenőr and Debreceni Hírlap. Went to Budapest in fall 1900, studied law for a time, and then pursued philosophy, theology, linguistics, and literary history at University of Budapest. Plans for literary career kept him from completing studies leading to teaching career. Worked in Ministry of Culture and then Office of Statistics. Several of his articles on literary subjects appeared in Uránia in 1902. Became editorial staff member of Az Újság in fall of 1903, with which he remained until 1909. Married Eugénia Holics in 1905. Wide recognition came in 1908 on publication of Hét krajcár in Nyugat. During 1903-1908 he frequently toured villages to collect folk songs and tales, though he never published any of them. Began close relationship with Endre Ady (q.v.) in 1909; considered him a major influence on his life and writings. Member of Petőfi-Társaság in 1912. Generally viewed as a distinguished writer of prose by 1919. During 1918-1919 he helped to revive Petőfi-Társaság, served as vice president of Vörösmarty Academy, as an editor of Néplap and as senior member of Világszabadság, and contributed to Pesti Futár, Vörös Lobogó, Fáklya, and Somogyi Vörös Újság. Member of Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1919. After failure of Revolutionary Government, he was barred from Kisfaludy-Társaság and Petőfi-Társaság; plays were not performed in National Theater until 1928; writings appeared only in Nyugat and Az Est Publications. After suicide of first wife he married Mária Simonyi in 1926. Became editor of prose section of Nyugat at end of 1929. Named honorary citizen of hometown in same year. Resigned editorship of Nyugat at beginning of 1933. Assumed editorship of Kelet Népe in December 1939 to provide publication opportunities for populist writers. Divorced second wife in 1939 and lived in Leányfalu, from where he commuted to Budapest. Isolation increased and he turned attention almost exclusively to writing. Funeral attended only by handful of mourners. ¶ Most important realistic writer of his generation; presented condition of Hungarian peasants for first time in full detail. Wrote plays but novels and short stories are most important writings. Dealt acutely with ugliness and poverty of peasant life but often treated lighter aspect of Hungarian scene with genuine humor. Publicist writings and literary criticism vital to understanding of period. ¶ Many of his novels have been translated into Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, English, Esthonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Rumanian, Russian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Turkish, and Ukrainian; editions of his short stories are available in Bulgarian, Czech, Esthonian, Finnish, German, Hindi, Lithuanian, Persian, Rumanian, Russian, Slovakian, Swedish, and Ukrainian, and an edition of his plays in Russian.

NAGY ISTVÁN

Born February 22, 1904 in Kolozsvár, Transylvania. Novelist, short-story writer, essayist. Father, a factory worker, killed on front in World War I; mother lost arm in industrial accident. Forced by poor financial circumstances to leave elementary school in fifth form. Became cabinetmaker, tramped through Rumania and Balkans. Educated himself in various trades and with help of Communist party seminars. Served as president of Munkás Segélyegylet. Helped to found Korunk in Kolozsvár in 1926, which published works of Attila József, Gyula Illyés, Áron Tamási, Lajos Kassák, and János Kodolányi (qq.v.). Imprisoned a year for participation in railroad strike in 1933. Became provincial secretary of Vörös Segély in Kolozsvár 1934-1935 and then member of its Bucharest office. Imprisoned for these activities 1935-1936. After release became member of Transylvanian and Bánát committee of Communist party until 1938. Awarded Erdélyi Szépmíves Céh Prize for "Özönvíz előtt" in 1936. By this time he was looked upon as a pioneer of realism in Hungarian literature in Transylvania. Persecuted during World War II. Returned to Transylvania from Rumanian internment camp in fall of 1940. Increased activity in Communist party and linked himself with workers' writers, as he had previously associated himself with populist writers through Kelet Népe, Magyar Csillag, and Szabad Szó. Also contributed to Népszava. Editor of Világosság and then of Igazság 1944-1946. Member of Kolozsvár committee of Rumanian Workers' Party in 1945. Became professor and university rector. Parliamentary representative 1948-1952. Named associate member of Rumanian Academy of Sciences in 1954. Managing editor of Nyelv- és Irodalomtudományi Közlemények in Kolozsvár. Awarded Rumanian National Prize for revised edition of A legmagasabb hőfokon in 1955. Rumanian delegate to UNESCO conference in India in 1956. Member of Nagy Nemzetgyűlés Elnöksége 1957-1961 and its representative since 1961. At present a member of central board of Rumanian Writers' Federation. ¶ Realistic writer dealing with problems of proletariat. Novels and short stories generally considered to be best. Studies also important, especially his sociographic sketches. ¶ A legmagasabb hőfokon and Réz Mihályék kóstolója have been translated into Rumanian, A szomszédság nevében into Rumanian and Serbian, and some of his short stories into Bulgarian, German, Polish, Rumanian, and Russian.

NAGY LAJOS

Born February 5, 1883 in Apostag-Tabányitelek; died October 28, 1954 in Budapest. Novelist, short-story writer, publicist. Illegitimate child; mother Júlia Nagy, once servant in Pest, earned living by taking in boarders. Raised by maternal grandparents until six. Then lived in Budapest with mother and completed schooling. Began study of law but did not obtain degree. Worked in various law offices and served as District Administrator in Abaujszántó for time in 1906. Beginning in 1904 served frequently as tutor to Jankovich-Bésán family. From 1912 on generally lived on earnings from writings. Neuresthenic condition exempted him from military service in World War I. Edited Bolond Istók in 1918 and then Borsszem Jankó. Publicist writings supported Revolutionary Government of 1918-1919, and he served as literary adviser to Szellemi Termékek Országos Tanácsa. No action taken against him after failure of Revolutionary Government, but unrepentant attitude made it difficult for him to obtain positions. Major contributor to Nyugat beginning in 1922 and editor of its Arcadia column for a time. Opposed resurgent nationalism and anti-semitism in early 1920's. In mid-1920's he strengthened relations with such Communists as Sándor Gergely, László Gereblyés, and Aladár Tamás. Became acquainted with Attila József (q.v.), who looked upon Nagy as fatherly friend throughout life. His writings began to appear increasingly in 100 % and Forrás. Edited Együtt 1927-1928. Married Boris Szegedi in 1932. Awarded Baumgarten Prize in 1932, 1935, and 1938. Attended Writers' Conference in Moscow with Gyula Illyés (q.v.) in 1934. Affiliated himself with populist writers in 1935 for a time. Three numbers of his periodical, Nagy Lajos Különvéleménye, appeared in 1939. During World War II he opened a small bookstore, worked on autobiography, and contributed to Magyar Csillag. After 1945 he joined Communist party and contributed to numerous periodicals, including Szabad Nép. Went to Switzerland for health in 1947. Awarded Kossuth Prize in 1948. Numerous works published, but neglected during last years of life. ¶ One of the most important writers of prose fiction between two World Wars. Now being viewed mainly as realistic writer with socialistic outlook who has influenced authors of generation after 1945. Used Freudianism in writings for a time. Effective satirist. ¶ Some of his short stories have been translated into Bulgarian, English, French, German, Polish, Rumanian, and Serbian.

Born April 18, 1901 in Nagybánya. Novelist, dramatist, essayist. Father a geography and history teacher. Family lived in Szolnok briefly, then moved to Budapest. Attended Budapest schools and began to write short stories and poetry. Studied philosophy at University of Budapest for half year beginning in fall of 1919, then entered medical school, obtaining degree in 1923; also training in dentistry. Practiced dentistry for a time and then became school physician, which he remained until 1942. Awarded Nyugat Prize for "Horváthné meghal," a short story, in 1925; other writings appeared in Nyugat, Napkelet, and Protestáns Szemle. Visited Paris. Radical views separated him from conservative connections. He quarreled with Mihály Babits (q.v.) in 1932 and broke relationship with Nyugat. In 1932 he founded Tanú, which he wrote entirely himself until it ceased in 1936. Through Tanú became ideologue of populist writers. Director of literary section of Rádió for short time 1934-1935. Writings appeared in Válasz, Kelet Népe, Tükör, Híd, and Magyar Csillag. Private tutor in school in Hódmezővásárhely 1945-1950. Silent for political reasons 1949-1953, period in which he turned to translating. Since 1950 has lived on earnings from writings. Received Attila József Prize for translations of Tolstoy and Zakrutykin in 1952. Original works began to appear again in 1954. Supported socialism in 1956 Revolution. Awarded Kossuth Prize for Égető Eszter and Galilei in 1957. Visited Soviet Union in 1959. ¶ One of the most important prose writers in 20th-century Hungarian literature. Began as writer of studies and treatises, then turned to novels and plays. Independent populist writer. Novels are strongly realistic and use techniques of West European realistic novel. Plays generally influenced by Ibsen, strongly intellectual. Social dramas influenced development of drama between two World Wars. Subject matter that of peasant and village life. Much psychological analysis of crises forced on individual by society. Especially noted for sensitive treatment of problems of women. His translations are also important: Goncsarov, Gorky, Ibsen, Jirásek, Kleist, Lessing, Pushkin, Shakespeare, A. Tolstoy, L. Tolstoy, Wilder, and Zakrutykin. ¶ A minőség forradalma has been translated into German; Bűn and Gyász into Czech; Égető Eszter into Bulgarian, French, German, and Serbian; Galilei into Russian; Iszony into Czech, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian, Serbian, and Spanish; Kocsik szeptemberben into Italian; and some of his short stories into English, French, and German.
