Born June 30, 1884 in Huszt; died October 2, 1953 in Budapest. Poet, novelist, short-story writer, dramatist, journalist. Began schooling in Debrecen. Wrote poetry while still in school and published small volume of poetry in 1902, in Mezőtúr. Moved to Budapest and became a journalist when 19. Appearance of his poems and short stories in periodicals and dailies caught attention of public. He worked for Az Est and then Az Újság. Spent life at journalistic and creative activity. ¶ Often considered to be the best representative of impressionism and the Decadent School in Hungarian literature. His lyric poems contain reflections on his youth; short stories and novels deal with his life in Debrecen and that of ordinary men and artists in Budapest. Avoided contemporary problems, celebrating nostalgic longings for youthful purity and a better world. Excellent portrayer of everyday life in Budapest. ¶ Azra and Május have been translated into English, Bűneim, Emberszag, and Lila akác into German, Dali dali dal and Október into Italian, and some of his poems into English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese. Portuguese, and Rumanian.

A study maintaining that Szép did not associate himself with any school of writing, but if his intellectual predecessors must be sought, they are, to some measure, Verlaine and Francis Jammes instead of Ady or Baudelaire. Considers his world to be that of the small joys and sorrows of man. Notes that his first critics considered his verses and short stories to be impressionistic. Marks him as one of the most significant masters of Hungarian poetic prose. DLC IC InU MiD NjN NN NNC GyBDS GyBH GyGNSU

Specialized in Hungarian, German, and English, and obtained doctorate in 1924. Writings first published in 1921 in Nyugat under the name Antal Kristóf Szerb. Visited Paris and Italy and spent 1929-1930 studying in London. Began teaching in Széchenyi István Kereskedelmi Iskola in 1928. Became president of newly founded Magyar Irodalomtudományi Társaság in 1933. Became privat-docent at University of Szeged in 1937. Served in forced labor camps during World War II and died there after long period of illness and starvation. ¶ Wrote novels and short stories and developed the detective novel in Hungarian literature, but the essay was his major contribution. Strongly humanistic in outlook. His studies of Hungarian and world literature were significant and utilized method of history of ideas. His writings combined learning and artistic taste. A review stating that he has created a new style in writing about literature, uses the methods of modern history of ideas, has not altered the views of the great poets very much but has made them more human by removing them from their pedestals and placing them among the community of men, reduces the literary importance of Sándor Kisfaludy and Mihály Tompa, adds new traits to the traditional portraits, and, in the main, applies the viewpoint of the Nyugat School to Hungarian literature. Characterizations of his Magyar irodalomtörténet, A világirodalom története, and Királyné nyaklánca. The second viewed as showing the boundaries of his literary and learned capacities and as shifting in method between Spengler's views and the feelings of the nostalgie du boulevard with the structure and the nostalgia constantly battling each other. A portrait of the "writer and reader" who found the artistic form for his vast reading of literary history by applying the vision of the novel, who learned from his study of history that there is no humanity in reality, who was compelled to think not as a politician or revolutionary but as a literary person, and who embraced his people with love but without having had confidence in them for a long time. A study of his writings postulating that in his early years he was affected by the history of ideas which produced a synthesis of European and Hungarian qualities; that his stress on the history of ideas hindered his followers from arriving at an interest in human welfare and from examining the connections between society and the development of the arts; and that he was also influenced by Freud and Jung. Subsequently, the conditions in Hungary focused his attention on questions of society, as in Magyar irodalomtörténet, which is based on a literary-sociological viewpoint with some apparent contradictions. His aesthetics moves from an endorsement of surrealism to a view nearer to historical reality. [CSt-H] [NN] [FiHI] GeLBM GeLU GyBH

A Marxist evaluation of his writings in literary history and his essays, in two sections: those of his years as a graduate student from the middle of the 1920's and those of his artistic and learned activities beginning in the 1930's. Maintains that the first period was characterized by objectivity and the second by subjectivity-by the strict methodology of professorial meticulousness, philosophical foundation, and compositions addressed to the initiated but crystal clear in meaning, and then by "sobering originality, ingenuity, lyrical tension, and ironical facility." An analysis of the development of his art in the essay giving attention to the role of Szerb, Gábor Halász, and László Németh in the evolution of the new form of the Hungarian essay, evaluating Szerb's hypothesis of pre-romanticism and his concept of the history of ideas, and maintaining that he sought to break with the school of literary history through his eclectic use of the history of ideas. States that his hypothesis and the most important traits of his literary history were a dike against the chauvinism, irrationalism, myth of race, and fascism spreading in the 1930's, and that those parts of the literary history are lasting in which his art of the essay emerges freely and in which evidence of his rare aesthetic judgment, his capacity for observation, and his feeling for poetic beauty is apparent. An examination of his early productive years, the influence of Trakl, and his search as a member of the young group of writers, the "Barbarians," for new statements and new forms. Posits that his narratives show the influence of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and, later, folk poetry, and the emergence of the problem of solitude; that György Lukács influenced his beginnings as an essayist most strongly; that in the beginning he was interested in German romanticism, particularly Hölderlin and then George Stefan; and that the first influence of the history of ideas pervades his work on S. Demonstrates Szerb's opposition to portraits of the deterioration of individuality in the American novel and his turning to Huxley's intellectualism, Lawrence's vitalism, Powys's psychography, Virginia Woolf's playfulness, and Garnett's and Collier's "wonder" as a defense. Born March 8, 1814 in Nagyvárad; died January 19, 1878 in Budapest. Dramatist. Born József Szathmáry. Father a lawyer and member of landed gentry. Attended schools in Nagyvárad and Temesvár. Completed philosophy section of Academy in Nagyvárad in 1832. Wanted to become physician; parents urged him to enter priesthood. Instead began engineering studies in Pest in 1834; soon decided to become an actor. In same year joined Várszínház Theatrical Company in Buda, which was directed by András Fáy (q.v.) and Gábor Döbrentei. He assumed new name at the command of his father, who disapproved of his theatrical career. Limited success as actor but wrote numerous plays. Contracted to write plays for National Theater in 1837, when it opened. Became member of Academy in 1840. Won award for Rózsa, the first of numerous prizes during his lifetime. Szökött katona (1843) first great success. Member of Kisfaludy-Társaság in 1845. Hundredth play, Struensee, presented in National Theater in 1872. Named director of National Theater in 1873, whose activities he had guided since 1850's as stage manager, dramaturge, and secretary. Became a member of Petőfi-Társaság in 1876. ¶ A very prolific playwright. Plays extremely popular. He established plays about peasants as a dominant form on Hungarian stage for decades. A dráma és válfajai was the first handbook on dramatic theory in Hungarian. Important for guidance he gave to National Theater. Also translated dramas from English, French, and German, the most notable being Goethe's Egmont and Shakespeare's Richard III and Comedy of errors. Many of his plays remain unpublished, in manuscript prompt-books in the National Széchényi Library. ¶ Szökött katona has been translated into Rumanian, Cigány and Csikós into Finnish, Liliomfi into Czech and Turkish, A nőuralom into Croatian, and some of his poems into German.

Primarily an examination of his literary development, his relationship with the growth of Hungarian drama, and the characteristics of his plays and their significant contribution to the development of plays about peasants as a genre. Maintains that A strike and Az amerikai, the plays under review, are less valuable than even his earliest ones, but that the author's use of contemporary themes in his plays not only attracted people to the theater but also advanced the successful struggle for political and literary transformation in Hungary. The influences on and the stylistic development of his short stories: the inspirational effect of his 15 years in Paris; the naturalism in his early writings and the influence of Balzac and Dickens; his later rejection of naturalism and the period of his Art Nouveau (which is still the most widely known by his readers); the birth of more valuable works in the 1920's and his slight movement toward a decorative realism; the radicalization of his views of society and the freeing of his humor and satirical bent as leading him to the creation of outstanding writings; and his deeper concentration on the Maupassant type of short story and his giving new life to the traditional form and the short short story. Born September 20, 1897 in Farkaslaka; died May 26, 1966 in Budapest. Novelist, short-story writer, dramatist. Descendant of a family of agricultural workers. Completed studies in Catholic gymnasium in Székelyudvarhely in 1917. Served on Italian front during World War I. Returned in 1919 to study law at University of Kolozsvár and at Kereskedelmi Akadémia in Kolozsvár, from which he obtained a diploma. Worked in a bank for a time. First story appeared in 1922 in Keleti Újság. Lived in United States 1923-1926, mostly in New York, supporting himself by physical work. Returned to Kolozsvár in 1926 and earned living as a journalist. Was affiliated with Helikon, Korunk, Erdélyi Fiatalok, and Válasz. Supported movements to improve the lot of common people and participated in work of populist writers. Employs a mixture of realism and romanticism, natural and supernatural. Fiction is highly anecdotal, diction highly poetic. Had strong humanistic feelings for the oppressed and was a constant supporter of the rights of man. ¶ Ábel a rengetegben has been translated into Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Polish, Szűzmáriás királyfi into Czech and German, and some of his short stories into English, French, German, Italian, Polish, and Serbian.

A review of two novels, Bölcső és bagoly and Hazai tükör, which, in addition to discussing their form and content as literature about the peasantry, traces the current of the peasant in a "people's literature" from the beginning of the twentieth century, and characterizes the place of his writings in the development. Born September 12, 1888 in Nagybánya; died June 11, 1969 in Budapest. Novelist, short-story writer, and musician. Father was a mining official in relatively good financial circumstances. Was educated in local school. Abandoned desire to become painter; apprenticed as clerk and lawyer. First story appeared in Nyugat in 1910, and from this time made living entirely from his writings. Enlisted in World War I, served on Russian and Italian fronts, and was discharged as second lieutenant in 1919. Views his entire life as an extension of happiness, freedom, and wandering of childhood and youth. Pursues music and music composition and painting as well as literary activity. Supported cause of workers and peasants between two World Wars. Also earned living by playing guitar and flute in theaters, cabarets, and taverns. Lived the life of own characters. Found true literary form in 1920's in novelette, especially Kakuk Marci cycle. Experimented with drama near end of 1930's, and "Cigányok" (not published?) was presented by Hungarian Theater and National Theater. Received Baumgarten Prize in 1929 and Kossuth Prize for Kakuk Marci cycle in 1949. ¶ Important figure in 20th-century Hungarian prose fiction. Very prolific. His early novels and short stories were romantic, later more realistic. Protagonists are wanderers and Bohemians. Strongly sympathetic toward those whose lives are without order and moral links. Characters follow purely private paths; often likened to John Steinbeck's hobo characters and attitudes. Made extensive contributions to children's literature. Translated some of Jack London's novels. ¶ Egy ceruza története has been translated into German, Legenda a nyúlpaprikásról into Flemish and German, Misi Mókus kalandjai into French, and some of his short stories into English, French, German, Serbian, and Slovakian.

Sees Kakuk Marci as his first complete work and as the only Hungarian work dealing effectively with the life of the beggar; states that it teaches but with enjoyment as no study can and that getting used to its language means becoming accustomed to the characters and participating fully in their experiences; maintains that the work serves as a key to all his previous writings. Maintains that the outstanding characteristic of his writing is not "the joyous sound of the satyr's pipe" but "the choked, airless, glassed-in cage of a normal society washing itself" in which the reader sees "the secrets of men undressing during their most delicate moments."
